The short version
Use engagement by views to compare reactions per view, then add sample coverage and content context before making a decision.
The view-based engagement formula
Add likes, comments and shares, divide by video views, then multiply by 100. For example, a video with 12,000 likes, 530 comments and 240 shares across 450,000 views has a view-based engagement rate of about 2.84%.
Keep the numerator and denominator from the same video and the same snapshot. If a provider returns counts at different times, the percentage may shift as views and reactions continue to arrive.
- Engagement rate by views = (likes + comments + shares) ÷ views × 100.
- Do not divide by followers if you want a view-based rate.
- A zero-view video has no meaningful percentage because division by zero is undefined.
What the percentage can—and cannot—tell you
The result summarises visible reactions relative to views. It can help you compare similar posts or find videos that prompted more public interaction per view.
It does not include watch time, saves if unavailable, audience quality, intent, or how views were distributed. It is not a complete quality score, and there is no single engagement threshold that makes every creator “good.” Compare creators in context and over more than one post.
Compare posts fairly
Choose a consistent sample window, such as the latest 10 returned videos, and check whether every post has the same metrics available. A creator with a partial video history should not be compared with a complete history as if both samples were identical.
Look at the median or the overall pattern instead of letting one viral post define the account. Then read a few captions and topics: a post can draw a different kind of response simply because it asked a question, covered a timely event or reached a new audience.
Calculate automatically or enter the numbers yourself
SpotNiche’s free calculator can look up the available public metrics from a standard TikTok video link. If you already have the numbers—or a link is not supported—you can switch to manual entry and use the same formula.
For a creator-level view, open a profile in the workspace and compare engagement with audience size, recent video performance, growth and estimated earnings. That is a more useful next step than treating one percentage as the verdict.
Put this into practice
Compare this video with the creator’s wider pattern.
Calculate a rate from one video link or enter the numbers yourself. Then use SpotNiche to compare recent posts, audience signals and the creator’s history.
